Day 24: More Miles

Pueblo, CO to Sheridan Lake, CO- Sheridan Lake Bible Church

I woke up early today and got going at 5:45 a.m. Pueblo was deserted. It was pretty cool cruising through the flat, empty roads. I met a bike tourist, Deb, and we talked a lot. When stopping for water or rest, the little biting flies were infuriating. They swarmed all over me. At mile 40 I started to fight a constant headwind. Two days in a row the winds have picked up just as the sun rises. I powered on and stopped for lunch at Noon, and by then, had already logged 85 miles! I tried out the maple butter from the care package from my family- mmmm good!

The headwind is now getting seriously frustrating and is slowing me down considerably. At 2:30 pm, and with 114 miles showing on my computer, I got to Eads, CO. It’s a veritable ghost town! I can’t stock up on food because it’s Sunday, and everything is closed. I wasted a lot of time just looking for a place to refill my water bottles. Eventually I ran into the owners of a closed restaurant. She invited me in, filled my water bottles for me, and even gave me some lemonade. I checked out the Eads Park for camping, but I knew there was a church 30 miles down the road that accepted cyclists. So I decided to continue on to Sheridan Lakes, CO. Grasshoppers have been all over the road today. Some are monsters and look like little lobsters. They all seem to have a death wish, jumping from both sides of the road directly in front of my tires as I ride. Some hit my legs, some hit my spokes and get launched into me and others fly right into my face- GROSS! I got chased by my first dog today, but a swift, loud “No” stopped him in his tracks. Thankfully, I made it to the Sheridan Lakes Bible Church and headed inside. I met the Pastor Jim and his wife Pam. They welcomed me in and gave me popcorn and pizza. They are great people and I’m so grateful places like this open their doors to cyclists. I set my sleeping bag up in the big hall for an early night.
