Rest day and a quick ride to Canada
I slept in, at least what counts for sleeping in for me these days – until 7:30 a.m., but I didn’t get much rest. My brother, Will was terrible to share a bed with last night. He kept kicking me all night long. Suddenly, sleeping in a tent doesn’t seem so bad!
I had some breakfast, and decided to take a short ride into Canada. I grabbed my passport, and quickly made it through customs, and crossed the border into Canada. I didn’t have any of my packs, so I was hoping to go fast. However, as I rode along “The Erie Bike Path,” (south along the Canadian side) I encountered a headwind. After about 20 miles, I decided to turn around, and head back toward the Falls. Strangely, I felt like I was still fighting the same headwind. I checked my weather, and confirmed the wind had changed direction. Apparently, it was just going to follow me around. Ugh! At least, without the packs, I was going fast. On my way back, just before I crossed the Rainbow Bridge back into the United States, I stopped to take in the sites. Horseshoe Falls really is amazing to see from the Canadian side.
It turns out that there is no specified bike path in and out of Canada over Rainbow Bridge. Pedestrians can walk across, but bikers have to wait in line with the cars to get through customs. Today, the lines were extra long. While I was waiting to get through, it started to downpour, and I got drenched. I waited forever in that line, at least 40 minutes, but finally made it back to the hotel.
Later that night we drove to the town of Lewiston, about 20 minutes away for dinner at a waterfront restaurant, “The Griffon Brewery and Gastropub” right on the Niagara River. On our way there, we stopped, and explored “Whirlpool State Park” and “Devils Hole State Park.” Later, back at the hotel, I organized my gear and planned my route for the next day. I’ll have some riding buddies tomorrow! VIEW PHOTOS
